Aswan, Egypt, January, 1994. A few weeks here was a thorough antidote for any boredom with concerns of the 20th century.

Aswan was a hinterland, quiet and unhurried. It was the off-season, so even the few tourists who ventured that far south from Cairo and Luxor were of the adventurous type.
