The entrance portal to the Duisburg city hall (Duisburger Rathaus) photographed in 1977.

Duisburg, West Germany, February, 1977. I was required to present myself at City Hall to have my passport stamped as a registered foreigner during my sojourn as an exchange student. This gave me leave to remain in the city for 2 months until a new stamp was required.

They ran a tight ship in Duisburg.

Most buildings in the city had a dark layer of coal soot built up over decades as the steel hub of Europe. Blast furnaces in the Ruhr industrial basin still operated when I lived there; deep orange sunsets occurred every evening when it wasn't raining. Today the furnaces are still, the sun shines without haze, and the stone building façades have been scrubbed clean.
