Le Vauban

Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France, July 2024

This café in Saint-Jean-de-Luz at the foot of rue Gambetta celebrates Sébastien le Prestre, Marquis of Vauban (1633 – 1707). He is well-known all over France for his ingenuity in the design of fortresses and other military constructions. The fort at nearby Socoa was designed by Vauban and completed in 1686.

The café isn't that old but the coffee is strong, just like a Vauban fortress.

History and description Located not far from the Spanish frontier, the site of Socoa (the corner in Basque) comprised a cap formed by a rocky outcrop, said to be of the Altha, allowing the roadstead of Saint-Jean-de-Luz by the west to be secured. The first fortifications of the site were made in the 16th century, after the Spanish rampage in 1525. It was a battery protecting the passage towards the bay, alongside another battery, namely that of Sainte-Barbe, installed on the other side.
